Live Edge vs. Engineered Slabs: What Hospitality Buyers Should Know
Live edge slabs keep the tree's natural boundary intact — no two pieces are alike, which is exactly why they work so well as a single statement piece: a reception desk, a boardroom table, a feature bar top.
Engineered or jointed slabs assemble smaller sections into a uniform panel. They trade some of that one-of-a-kind character for consistent sizing, more predictable lead times, and easier replacement if a single unit is ever damaged in a high-traffic hospitality setting.
For a single hero piece — a lobby table, a signature bar — live edge is usually the right call, because that piece is meant to be the thing guests remember. For a full rollout across many identical units — a restaurant's entire table count, a chain of guest-room headboards — engineered slabs keep the finish consistent across dozens or hundreds of pieces without buyers needing to sign off on every unique grain pattern individually.
The two aren't mutually exclusive on the same project: many of the fit-outs we deliver use one live-edge anchor piece alongside engineered units for the rest of the room. Worth raising with whoever's spec'ing your project before the order goes in, not after.
